Is Your Dog’s Morning Vomiting Normal? Let’s Talk Bilious Vomiting Syndrome

You wake up, and your dog throws up yellow foam. The vet calls it "bilious vomiting" and tells you not to worry. But it keeps happening. What’s going on?

It Might Not Be Too Much Acid - It Might Be Too Little

Contrary to popular belief, many dogs throw up in the morning due to low stomach acid, not excess. This is called hypochlorhydria.

When acid is too low:

  • Food doesn’t get fully digested
  • Undigested particles irritate the gut
  • The valve between the stomach and intestines doesn’t close properly
  • Bile sneaks back into the stomach overnight

By morning, that bile has pooled and irritated the stomach lining, triggering nausea and vomiting.

Simple Fix: Apple Cider Vinegar or Ghee

Try adding a small splash of apple cider vinegar (ACV) to your dog’s evening meal or mix it with bone broth before feeding. This helps acidify the stomach and improve digestion.

Alternatively, you can also add a small amount of good quality ghee to the meal. Ghee supports digestion, soothes inflammation, and can help coat the stomach lining for dogs with mild discomfort.

Other Helpful Changes

  • Feed a small bedtime snack (protein-based)
  • Ensure your dog is on a fresh, gut-friendly diet
  • Rule out other causes like SIBO, hypothyroidism, stress, or overuse of antacids like Omeprazole

Remember: vomiting isn't normal. It’s a signal that something’s off - and with the right approach, it's usually fixable.
